The opening of the children's telling

Long ago, in the town of Kshatriyakund, lived a kind king named Siddharth and his gentle queen, Trishala. In their palace even the guards spoke softly, and no hungry person was ever sent away.

One quiet night, Queen Trishala fell into a soft, peaceful sleep, and she began to dream. She saw a white elephant with four tusks, a strong and gentle bull, and a bright lion that was not fierce at all. She saw the goddess Lakshmi on a lotus, and a garland of sweet smelling flowers. She saw the cool silver moon and the warm golden sun.
