What it teaches Ahimsa Firmness in Vows Courage
The opening of the children's telling
Long ago in the city of Dwarika lived a kind boy named Jinadev. His family loved every living creature. They never hurt any animal, not even the smallest ant.
One day Jinadev became very sick. He was hot with fever, and he felt tired all the time. His mother and father sat by his bed every night, holding his hand. The best doctors came, but still he did not get better.

To carry into the day
A vow of kindness kept with a calm heart is a strength, not a burden.
To talk about together
Why do you think Jinadev cared so much about the animal, even when he was very sick himself?
Retold for JainStory from the traditional narrative and checked against published Jain sources. Details vary between tellings.
