The opening of the children's telling

Once there was a street dog named Kalu. He had one ear up and one ear floppy, and a waggy tail.

One morning a kind grandmother gave Kalu a warm, soft roti. Thank you, thank you, said Kalu's waggy tail. He held the roti in his mouth and trotted off to eat it in his favourite shady spot across the river.
