The opening of the children's telling

Long ago in a little village in Gujarat lived a boy named Jasho. Every day his mother listened to a beautiful prayer called the Bhaktamar. Only after hearing it did she eat her food. Little Jasho always went with her and listened too.

One day it rained and rained. The roads were full of water. Mother could not go to hear the prayer, so she did not eat. Jasho said, Mother, I can say it for you. And he said the whole prayer, every word! He had learned it just by listening.
